Deftones frontman Chino Moreno isn’t doing much to uphold the friendship he once had with his peers in the nu-metal scene from back in the day.
You might recall comments from Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch about Deftones turning down offers to tour with them back in March:
“We would like to tour with ’em again one day, but I don’t think they want to” Welch said.
Now, in a new interview with Metal Hammer, Chino has elaborated on the claims made by Brian “Head” Welch about his relationship with Korn. Chino throws some shade at his longtime friends, essentially trying to distance himself and his band from the whole nu metal label:
“We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with. It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan [Davis] would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say.
“I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’ The name of the genre was nü metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it.”
Ouch. I totally understand Korn being pissed about that.
Essentially, by Deftones wanting to stay separate from Korn and the whole “nu-metal” thing, it’s obviously something that they’re viewing as a negative at best or an embarrassment at worst.
I also think they’re overthinking it a bit. Bands left and right are succeeding with the nu-metal style in 2016 and 2017. Bring Me The Horizon comes to mind. There are tons of similarities between them and Korn.
For Deftones, they obviously see it another way but I think they’re being a little too cautious about their image.
