It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Internal Bleeding drummer, and veteran FDNY firefighter William “Bill” Tolley. A 14 year veteran of the FDNY, Tolley lost his life during a horrific fall while battling a blaze in Queens, NY.
A call that was much like many others he faced during his accomplished career turned tragic in a matter of seconds. The fire was considered “routine” and “mostly extinguished” at the time of the accident.
According to the New York Daily News, Tolley fell as he was attempting to step from the bucket at the end of a later onto the roof. He fell five stories to the sidewalk below.
Bill Tolley was a firefighter by day but also performed as the drummer in the iconic slam band Internal Bleeding. His passing leaves a large void in the metal community and he will be missed deeply by his wife, Marie, and his eight year old daughter.
His bandmates released this heartbreaking statement:
“Our drummer, the heartbeat of the band, William Tolley died today. There are ZERO WORDS to describe the loss. He was a good, decent and honorable man who loved his friends, his family and the people he served. There will never be another like him. There are no words to describe the utter sadness and despair we feel right now. We love you Bill.”
My heart goes out to Bill’s family, friends, and his bandmates. As my friends at MetalSucks rightfully pointed out… “We ask everyone in the metal community to crank some Internal Bleeding — one of the most important slam bands in history — as loud as fucking possible in Tolley’s memory.”
