Five Finger Death Punch has completed work on their new album, despite a difficult year for the band — particularly vocalist Ivan Moody. The FFDP frontman departed their latest tour with Shinedown with eight shows left due to an ‘illness’ after a sad on-stage ‘mental moment’, as Ivan later called it. They were also embroiled in a legal battle with their label, Prospect Park.
The lawsuit between Prospect Park and Five Finger Death Punch has been very direct. The label accused the band of “shamelessly attempting to cash in before the anticipated downfall of their addicted bandmate.” They went on to say the band is merely rushing to release new music before “Ivan does something stupid — dies — goes away to jail.” The band claimed that the label was merely upset that they were signing to a new label and called them “desperate”.
Regardless of all of the aforementioned issues, Five Finger Death Punch says they have completed work on their new album and have actually been riding around town enjoying it in private. Guitarist Jason Hook shared a photo in the drive thru line at Starbucks, while he says he was listening to mixes of the band’s new album.
Here’s where things get tricky. The band is under contract with Prospect Park to release this album, though they are also involved in a bitter lawsuit with them. You saw the hay-makers that were being thrown above.
Prospect Park does not have to release the band’s new album. Record labels have the right to refuse to release an album from a band, which would put both parties in a precarious position. For one, Five Finger Death Punch has ALREADY signed a deal with Rise Records to release future recordings. If Prospect Park holds this album, that will delay things with Rise Records.
On the other hand, Five Finger Death Punch sells more records than 99% of all bands out their. Seriously, their sales figures (even today) are nuts. They have a very loyal fan base, so an album release would be very lucrative for both parties. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
Our new record is finished! Listening to the mixes on my way thru @starbucks at 7:39am this morning!
